Foam Crib Mattress Questions and Answers

Voting Question: Going to be away for 5 days with my 14 month old?

I'm visiting my sister and mother in August and my mom has a Portable crib and a Pack N play - I can choose which to put my daughter in. We have a pack N play but she has really only been in it once or twice so I don't know what the mattress really feels like, if it's very hard, comfortable or uncomfortable, etc... It looks thin. The portable crib my mom has is a mini and has a 3" foam type mattress, the kind that came with it I assume, she has slept in that before but when she was 9 months and didn't weigh as much as now. I don't want her to be uncomfortable for 5 days sleeping on something hard or too thin - Do any of you moms have older babies who sleep in Pack N Plays instead of cribs and do just fine? Do you think she'll be uncomfortable? I have seen those fuzzy type sheets they sell for play yards - will that make it more comfortable? Or if I packed the mattress for the pack n play we have and bring it with us and put it on top of the mattress in the pack n play there would that make it more comfortable? Thanks. What the hell is wrong with you? I'm being ridiculous because I asked a question? Thats what the Yahoo!Answers forum is for, jackass more

Resolved Question: Travel Crib? Anyone with suggestions?

My daughter is 9 months old and we are begining to travel with eher overnight. Last night we used her Graco playpen with a foam mattress cut just for it and covered to give more cushion. Ummm...it was a very long and bad night. It is not going to work. I like the Bjorn travel beds, but I cannot afford that. Anyone have any suggestions??? She is a tosser and mover! That's what we have, and that is what she hates---> Pack and Play. The bassinet insert she cannot use because is sitting up and pulling up. I don't know the age limit on those, but she's reached it for me. more

Resolved Question: Crib mattress too small?

I got my crib mattress today, and I know all the specifications for how it should fit and what not. They say if you can fit two fingers side by side, the mattress is too small. It's firm, but foam - not coil. So I can fit two fingers, but snuggly. Like, the mattress is forced out of the way a bit, it's not like they slide in easily, they can be crammed in. Almost three fingers if I tried. I cannot take this mattress back. Got it second hand. It wasn't used actually, but second hand anyway. So I'll obviously buy a proper fitting mattress for safety, if I have to. Is there anyway to make this work? Put a bumper down, along the edges of the crib, level with the mattress just so it's in tighter and cover it all with a sheet? That sounds like it would work in my head, but maybe I am being completely insanely unsafe. Any other options? Let me know what you think. Thanks =) more

Resolved Question: Are polyurethane foam mattresses safe for a 20mos and 3 yr old?

We just bought our kids a new bunk bed from IKEA and we got these nice foam mats that go with the bed and they are made of polyurethane foam. I get concerned because ive heard that it causes breathing problems and maybe even sids...not sure if this is a for sure study. But I just want some advice so I can sleep at night. Has anyone ever used these? They had these vinyl crib mattresses before so now im just a little worried about them sleeping on this. more

Resolved Question: Nightmares and sleeping problems for 12 month old?

Our DD is almost 12 months old. Lately she has been whimpering in her sleep and sometimes wakes up screaming and crying. I was holding her one of the times she did this, and I kept holding her and saying "hannah look at me sweetie" in a calm voice because she just kept looking all around the room in stark terror. When she finally looked at me and saw I was there, she started calming down. She hears me just fine, but whatever is scaring her awake like that (about twice a week) is just overriding everything else. I've also noticed that she sleeps much better in our bed (it's very soft). I was wondering if there is any reason I couldn't get her a thin memory foam pad that would sit atop her crib mattress with a tight fitting sheet over the pad and mattress. Anyone else's baby wake up freaked out and what did you do or is there anything you can do? And any reason I can't make her mattress a bit softer now that she's old enough not to suffocate laying on a soft surface? I am planning on asking her doctor about both of these things at her 1 yr check up. more

Resolved Question: Where does your toddler sleep when you travel?

My son (2 year old, 30 lbs) has been sleeping in his toddler bed for a couple of week, usually great but we do have to threaten him with the crib occasionally when he keeps getting out of bed. My dilemma now is we are will be staying at a hotel and my mother's house soon. He doesn't sleep well with us so our options are playard, mattress on floor or his fold our foam couch? It's only for one night each place a few weeks apart but we're all use to sleeping through the night. Any advice is greatly appreciated! more

Resolved Question: Lightweight Mattress for Daybed?

bought my DD a daybed with trundle. I'm realizing what a pain it will be to make the two beds. Then I remembered how much easier it was to make her bed with a foam crib mattress. Granted that bed was a little too firm, but I'm hoping that was b/c it was a crib mattress, and not b/c those mattresses cannot be soft Are there any lightweight foam twin mattresses that would be more really comfortable on a daybed? Where could I buy?Her crib mattress is 7 lbs. Pottery barn kid teens had a 14 lb mattress, but no idea if comfortable more

Voting Question: Which is better a FOAM or COIL mattress that is for both a crib and toddler bed?

I'm about to purchase a mattress for my soon to be born sons crib and need some help. Which is better foam or coil. I would like my baby to be as comfortable as possible and for the mattress to last. Thanks... more

Resolved Question: What does "coil" mean when it comes to a mattress?

I've finally found the correct size mattress for my DaVinci Mini Crib and it says it's only a "50 coil" where as the regular sized mattresses for a Crib/Toddler bed is around 260 coils. When I first ordered the crib 2 years ago for a temporary fix in between moves for my 1st son, it came with a 2 inch padded foam-like mattress. Now that is obviously not going to work with a new born as we are back in between transitions for the year - so I found the proper fitting mattress for this particular crib. (It's on Target.com if you want to take a look) But anyways, what does that mean for the "50 coils" part...??? THANKS! more

Resolved Question: how to home make a crib mattress?

How can I make a mattress the size of 37 1/2 inches long 23 1/2 inches wide no more then 1/2 inches thick. Can I get that stuff that you use to fill in home made pillows and just get some flannel or wool blanket and will that work? Then I would make it the size I need. Would that work? I am wondering if this will work. If you have any other ways I could make the mattress let me know or anything else I could use let me know. I also was thinking of that foam that people add to there mattress would that work better? I could cut it and put it together and then would that work? What ways are the best?Thank you for the warning every one. That is why I just ask to be on the safe side. more

Resolved Question: Where to open a baby registry for organic products?

We are expecting a child in December 2009 (we don't know gender yet) and have started a registry at Babies-R-Us, but cannot find many products: wool/alpaca blankets, cotton plush blankets, modern looking cotton nursery bedding, organic toys, foam mattress, light-weight crib in cherry color (there is one in maple color at Babies-R-Us though) ... Does it mean that we should open a registry at another store instead? What other national store chain would be good for a variety of organic/quality baby products? more

Resolved Question: Foam vs. Spring Crib Mattress?

I purchased a foam mattress which I feel contributes to night and nap awakenings. When my LO moves, she ends up making a loud banging sound on the mattress. Would a spring mattress avoid this? Also, she sleeps better on an adult mattress especially if I use those cuddly blankets. She does not make as much noise. What are your experiences with crib mattresses?Thank you everybody. I will look into a spring mattress. The soft cuddly blanket is not fluffy at all. Just a tiny bit furry to muffle out her movements. She did not accept a swaddler after 3 weeks. Also, the foam mattress is very stiff but I think that creates the loud hollow noise. more

Resolved Question: Do you think this will work for a bassinet?

I have been searching all over for a pad or mattress for my bassinet and cannot find anything! On eBay I found these 2 inch thick memory foam mattress toppers for a crib mattress and was thinking we could just cut it to the correct size. Do you think this will work? The bassinet pad that was in it...to be quite honest...sucks! It is like a piece of cardboard with a sheet on it! I was looking for something a little softer to put in it. This is the bassinet we have. http://www.babydirect.com/p-2546-badger-basket-portable-bassinet-and-cradle-with-base-ecru-waffle-pleated.aspxNo "Foam Shop" in our area. I called a woman that has an upholstery store and she gave me a quote of about $70 for a piece of firm foam the size we needed. Not spending $70 for a piece of foam for a bassinet that will be used for about 3 months.Miranda: In Re: to your "Save your money and put your baby directly into a cot/crib i did." comment... Well...Good for you! I am glad you saved your money and bought a crib...but that is not at all what this is about, is it? No. I have the baby's nursery set up...with a crib even...imagine that! Some people that buy a bassinet, most in fact, buy a bassinet so their newborn can sleep in their bedroom with them for the first couple months, not to avoid buying a crib. That was a foolish statement that should have been left out... I did not mention anything about not having a crib or not wanting to buy one. more

Voting Question: Do they have tempur pedic crib mattresses? or toppers?

I have gotten my baby addicted to our bed! She is seven months and loves our bed because we have a foam topper and it is really comfortable. At first I thought she wouldn't sleep in her bed because she likes me with her... Then i realized when she put herself to sleep and stays asleep.. in MY BED that its not me at all but my bed!! I don't care if its "not safe" because she is able to sit up, turn all directions and move around, so I think she is fine. I can't get her to go in her bed because her mattress is like as hard as the floor! Most i have felt are hard.. what should I do??? Where can I find a topper?? more

Resolved Question: Is crib mattress too flat/hard?

Our newborn doesn't want to sleep in his crib. I feed him, he falls asleep and when I put him down in his crib, he wakes up crying. I've made a "bed" on the couch (it's very big and he can't fall off) for him during the day. I use a soft blanket and he falls asleep straight away after a feed. I put him on our bed today and he slept. I'm convinced that the foam crib mattress is too hard or flat and it somehow bothers his neck/head. Has anyone else experienced this with their newborn? I'm wondering if there's perhaps a sort of soft pad that I can put on top of his mattress that will be more comfortable for him. Any constructive advice will be appreciated. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: memory foam for crib....?

I was thinking about ordering a memory foam mattress for my babies crib(he isn't born yet) and i was wondering is it safe to get one or is it hazardous? would the baby choke? I've heard mixed reviews on this and i was wondering is this safe or not? Does it cause SIDS? Or what is another type of mattress that is more safer. more

Resolved Question: Hand-me-down stroller in not so hot condition, fiance insisting I use it?

I'm 22 weeks pregnant with my first child and a friend of the family gave us hand-me-down's from her grandson. She gave us their crib (he did not sleep at their house a ton) that has a barely used mattress with its plastic still on it, a booster seat, an outdoor swing, a travel playpen, and a stroller. Everything BUT the stroller is in GREAT condition or just needs a tiny bit of help and I am definitely going to clean them all off and use them.. however the stroller seems to be a bit TOO used. It has burns on its handle from cigarettes, the snaps are rusty and scratched and a few are even missing from the basket, it's dirty, all of its other parts are very scratched up, and a some of the fabric (even fabric holding the seat on) is fraying or ripped. I don't like the stroller. I know it will wash and easily be cleaned up -- but I don't know how I can fix it up -- since I can't exactly replace the foam parts on it, plastic scratches are permanent, what can I do about snaps, and the fabric doesn't seem to want to mend (I possibly could be trying to use too thin thread). When I told my fiance that I didn't like the stroller and wanted to go find a different used one or even a new one, he got pretty upset. We are tight on money, true. We could use and do need hand-me-downs, true. Yes, I know. I'm extremely grateful that they gave me all of these nice items -- it's awesome! The thing is, I can't put my kid in a stroller that I think could fall apart at any second! But, he doesn't want me to go look for a different one and insists this one is fine and that the kid won't care what it looks like. He said I'm being too picky. How can I convince him that a stroller in such ragged condition is a bad idea? Should I just usurp his judgment and go get a different stroller? Or, could he possibly be right because we don't have tons of money I should just use it, and am just being an unreasonable first-time mom?  more

Voting Question: foam or spring mattress for my toddler's beds?

I am switching my toddler's into toddler bed's from cribs. Which is better a spring mattress of a foam? I am looking for something a little softer because they have been used to sleeping in my really soft bed. The crib mattresses seem so hard though. Do the foam ones make a difference? more

Resolved Question: What baby bedding is safe and what isn't?

I'm pregnant with my first child and I've been told, no loose fitting sheets, blankets, crib bumpers, pillows, comforters, etc. So..do you just put the baby on a bare mattress? Wouldn't the baby get cold? So do you dress them in a lot of clothes? Is swaddling ok, or those baby foam sleep position things? Thanks :)Why do they sell these things if they are unsafe anyway? They are everywhere! more

Resolved Question: foam mattress top in crib?

Resolved Question: What to do about 7 month old who climb out of crib?

I have a very active and strong 7 mth old he wears 18 mth clothes and is off the charts at 22lbs. My problem is we where co-sleeping until he learned to crawl which was last month. So i have been putting him in his crib once he falls asleep. Last night I heard a strange clanging on the moniter and went up stairs to find him teetering on the rail of the crib hitting our bed with a chewing ring. Needless to say I was hoping this was a one time event, but I put him back in it and he proceded to climb out with a big smile on his face. So here I am lying on a foam cushion that you put on the floor with him beside me. We had a doctor appointment today and she said put the mattress on the floor but that didnt work he kept almost falling off every time he moved. It is so scary because at his age he has absolutly no concept of danger. I found this cribnet that to me looks like a cage plus he is a strong little guy I am not sure this would last for long. Does any one have any suggestions? more

Resolved Question: Where to find a crib mattress without coils in them?

Everywhere I look it's either a coil crib mattress or a memory foam mattress. I got my son a Kolcraft mattress that had a foam filling, but it's not memory foam. Where can I get another crib mattress for my second baby that is not a coil mattress or memory foam?Hmm maybe, but my son's mattress doesn't feel that way. Resolved Question: Holy Crap we found metal rings from baby mattress in crib?!?!?!?!!?!?

While changing the linens on our one year olds crib mattress we found these little gold stylets. The are the stylets that are inserted into the side of the mattress which Im assuming are there for ventilation. There are about 30 of these 1/4 inch little metal rings in reach side of the mattress. Just there for the curious little hands of a toddler to find and swallow or inhale. Very SCARY!!! And on top of all that the manufacterers sticker has no company information, no telephone number, this company "Quality Foam Products" cannot be located anywhere only in a search engine. Im waiting on a return phone call from the "HIGH END" children furniture store that sold me the item. Anyone else ever come across this problem????? Im not its something to keep in mine for your own children!!!!!!!! more

Resolved Question: memory foam mattresses for cribs?

Resolved Question: Trying to get my 6mth old to start sleeping in her crib?

She has been sleeping in an Amby Baby bed since about 1mth, and napping in her swing throughout the day. I would like to get her to where she will sleep in her crib or playpen for naps. The mattress in the Amby bed if a piece of foam, so I'm guessing she doesn't like the solidness of the mattress in her crib. Does anyone know of a good soft mattress pad. I have seen some that are memory foam, but don't know if they are safe. She does rollover on her own & push herself up. She even sleeps on her face in her Amby bed, no matter how many times I turn her back over to her back, she just flips right back over herself. Any suggestions, or is anyone else familiar with these Amby beds & how did you wean your little one from sleeping in it?I'm not complaining that she doesn't sleep, she's a sleeping champ...8-10 hours a night. I LOVE the Amby bed & the fact that she sleeps in her own room & not with us. We love to camp in the summer & I would like for her to be comfortable sleeping in her playpen in our toyhauler while we are out on weekends. Maybe the eggcrate pad will work for her...hopefully. more

my son is 10 months old, strong and healthy, but i cannot find any information on this. Anyone know where I can buy one?wow...people sure have some strong opinions! I think many people misunderstood that i was asking about a mattress PAD. At 10 months, he IS capable of rolling over, sitting up or even turning his head. I'm pretty sure my 27 lb baby wont sink too far into a 1 1/2 inch pad. AND anyone who has or has seen one knows that they are very firm. when I asked this question, I was hoping to get answers from people who can read and comprehend, or have knowledge of the product. thanks to those of you who tried to be helpful. good luck with your new baby ericka k. I hope you get a boy (4 sons/1- 14 year old daughter)they are all the fun with half the hytserics...lol. ps had to pick baby 1 as best, because it was the dumbest answer given...peace and long life, all. more
