Furniture Questions and Answers
Open Question: I want to change the color of my kitchen cabinets?
My cabinets are oak but were white washed by the previous owners in the 90s. I hate the white washed color because they get grimy and filthy and when I try to clean them it rubs off the finish. They are looking pretty gross now. I would like to have them refinished to a mahogany color.
I've had three bids now. Two companies claim that they can just clean them up and put toner OVER the white wash color and gradually stain them to a mahogany. They are not going to use stripper. One company is going to do a bit of sanding and then build the color over the white wash for $3500 (which seems a bit high) but the other will just put the toner directly over the white wash with NO sanding for around $2080. I have this other guy who refinished my deck and did a nice job and I gave him one of my cabinet doors to experiment on (he's never done cabinets but has refinished lots of furniture and decks). He used stripper to get off the varnish and most of the stain, then lightly sanded to get the rest of the white wash off. Then he stained them with a mahogany color and sealed it with polyurethane. I haven't seen the finished product yet, but he says he's confident that he can do the job and make it look really nice. He's willing to charge $1800 for the job.
Which of these methods sounds the best? I just want my cabinets to look really good. I want the wood grain to show through and don't want it to look painted. I also don't want anything to peel or come off.

I was with an elderly lady the other day helping her tidy up he house after a fire partially destroyed her lounge. Some furniture had to be put into her garage so the lounge could be redecorated.
Her garage roof seems to have thin slabs of concrete, but when you knock on them there is an echoing sound, which I believe concrete doesn't do. I believe her garage roof is entirely made of Asbestos and it is in poor condition, but not yet crumbling.

moreOpen Question: Should I get my 15 yr. old daughter rats?
She has wanted them for as long as I can remember, but I will simply not give in. Rats are nasty animals and I simply do not want them in my house. She's been allowed to keep a hamster (that ended up having near 12 babies- she found homes for them) The hamster was alright. She kept up with it until the day it died and we never had a problem with it being in the house. Except for the occasional nibble on a piece of furniture. Now she has a dog that she keeps up with too with little reminder to maintain it's upkeep, and now she wants rats. Like I said, I will not give in. BUT... Today, she cleaned the ENTIRE house by herself -kitchen, game room, her room, bathrooms, including MINE, she vacuumed... and I don't know what to think. She's done such a wonderful job, incredible, really, but I'm still confused on what to do. I don't like rats, but should I give in and get her rats anyway? She can keep up with any kind of rodent presented to her, but still, rats are disgusting. Should I or should I not?she already knows 'everything' about them

I am in my 40s and have been a stay at home mom for 13 years. I had an antique furniture business for three years and worked part-time at Macys and Holiday Inn as front clerk in between the 13 years staying home. I recently had another child who is now almost two. I have two kids and my husband is an IT Project Manager. Our finances have not been good for the past three years. I would like to work actively as a realtor, part-time since I still have a little one. Day care would be more expensive , too. I am worried about my SS retirement money which isn't a lot. I have a small amount in my retirement account which I put a little amount each time I sell on ebay. My 401k from my previous job is not a lot. What can I do to make myself more secure during my retirement age? Is my situation common where the wife who stays home does not have a lot set aside for old age? My husband says his retirement money is ours but to me that is not something I want to depend on for the reason being it is not a joint account. What do you think?

moreOpen Question: Analogy of Gods Love in Action?
God's Love In Action!
On the day my daughter was born, I looked at how beautiful, how pink and perfect, how adorable she was, and I knew that nothing but the best would do for her. I decided right then and there that I would provide for her the same love and support that God has given us, his human children, over our lifetimes.
So I built her a special room in my house, with a one-way mirror and an intercom system, and I filled it with everything she would need -- furniture, toys, and special TV monitors with which I could show her educational and inspirational programming. Then I hugged her tightly to me, told her that I would always love her, and sealed her in her room.
My wife objected to this strenuously, but as we all know, it was Eve who caused the downfall in the Garden of Eden. So women's opinions can't be trusted.
The first few years were pretty easy. I had rigged up arm-length gloves through the wall, like you see in premature baby incubators, and I used those to feed and change her. I never let her see me, but I was always right there, admiring how beautiful and perfect she was. I would stand behind the one-way mirror for hours and watch her cry, and fidget, and fuss about, and -- every once in a while -- smile.
I got every educational tape I could about baby and child development and showed them constantly on the monitors. It's with no small amount of pride that I report that she learned to walk and talk in only a few years just by watching the monitors. She learned from prerecorded messages how much I loved and cared for her, that she was my pride and joy, and she need only ask me for anything she wanted. She learned to use the intercom system to talk to me about her desires, her fears, her thoughts on life, and her questions. Of course I never answered her, but sometimes I would sneak in while she was sleeping and give her something nice, and she always used the intercom to thank me.
Once, my family hit upon hard times, and I had to sneak in while she was sleeping and take all her toys and furniture to sell at our garage sale. She cried nonstop for about a week, and she must have asked "why?" over the intercom about a hundred times, but of course I never answered. She was only ten years old, and there's no way she could understand the reasons behind my decision, so why bother explaining?
Well, today is her eighteenth birthday, the day I promised would come when she could join me and live in my house and explore the great, big world. The thing is, she gradually stopped using the intercom over the last few years, and when her birthday came she had stopped believing that I existed at all! So even though she had followed all my rules of conduct, I reluctantly pushed her out the front door and locked it behind her. Because what does being a good person mean if it's not for my benefit?
As I write this she is pounding on the front door and begging for forgiveness. But, you know, rules are rules. I sure hope her little brother turns out better.
The Moral Of The Story
* We have not received a direct sign from our heavenly father in almost 2000 years to assure those of us who weren't alive back then that He still loves us.
* Being omniscient, He knows that the majority of His children will go to Hell, reputedly a rather nasty place. Even the most absentee, deadbeat dad on Earth would at least make a phone call if his child were contemplating suicide, so why do we get less for an eternity of damnation?
* Being omnipotent, a phone call is well within God's abilities.
* Even creatures much less intelligent than ourselves can be comforted in times of stress (do you not reassure your pet verbally and by touch when taking them to the vet?), yet we are forced to read meaning from seemingly random signs and the multiply-translated scribblings of Iron Age shepherds.
* When children ask for candy, parents don't always buy it for them, but they always respond "yes" or "no". Our prayers are never answered with a real answer, always with a cryptic sign.
* The world is full of hundreds of religions, preaching vastly different credoes. Therefore, most of them are wrong. If your child were to read a math book and mistakenly conclude that 2+2=5, would you not gently guide them toward the correct answer? Would it be even more imperative if their life were at stake? Their immortal soul?
* If you discovered a charlatan using your name to defraud your child of his hard-earned piggybank fund (don't deny that at least some TV preachers are faking it), would you not condemn that charlatan or at least warn your impressionable child that he is giving his money to a con artist?
If the Christian God exists, he's a sick, demented, or senile bastard and worthy of no one's worship.
Look, I'm not mad at God, as it might appear from this diatribe. You cannot be angry at what does not

My fiance and I recently purchased a 3-piece microfiber furniture set, and we'd like to protect it against stains and things of that nature. I saw that the Scotchgard Fabric Protector isn't intended for microfiber, and I know there are products out there that are...the problem is, I can't seem to find them.

So...what's out there? What can I buy? Where can I buy it?
Thank you.

Our baby golden was recently wormed in the past week. He's purebred with all his papers and has most of his shots, parvo, rabbies, temps. We need to get his next nemix shot here soon. He has been having a looot of diarrhea and just today he had a teeeeeny bit of blood in his stool. I have been around quite a bit of dogs (I have 4 others aside from this lil guy) and he is acting perfectly normal. Playing, eating, peeing EVERYWHERE lol, he doesn't whine and he's not sleeping any more than a normal puppy should. Hasn't thrown up at all either. We bought the same type of puppy food the breeders were feeding him so I don't think that it has anything to do with the type of stool he's been having. We're taking him to the vet ASAP still but I'd still like to know if there's anything severely wrong with him. Again it was slight blood, a little bit of red at the end of going to the bathroom, and he's acting absolutely fine. Doesn't want to do anything but chew on his rope toy...or our furniture! Haha. Any incite on this would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a computer desk and TV stand a few years ago. Its made from natural pine wood that has been lightly waxed (has not been varnished). Its beginning to turn that horrible orange colour though and I would like to bring it back to life.
Can someone please provide some instructions on what I need to do. I have googled it, but instructions are not very clear. I understand I can either sand it down, or possibly use lime (what does that mean - surely it doesn't mean use lime juice on it does it)?

My roommate & I signed a lease last week. In the lease, it said that we can move-in on August 6th. But then, the leasing agent calls me and says we can't move in until August 15th. This fight/argument has been on going now for over a year. I'm going insane. When she moved into my house she took it upon herself to to start doing most of the cooking and cleaning which is great.. but now she's trying to get into the organizing and placement of furniture etc. That would be nice but i swear this girl is so THICK in the head. she has no concept of style and really where to put these things, everyday i come home just about i have to spend around 1-2 hours rearranging everything as once again shes tried to put her stupid spin on my house. like i have an old golf club set up over the mantle piece to display them, she puts them in the hallway or something thickheaded and replaces it with a stupid plant that doesn't even fit properly on the mantle piece and it looks TOTALLY out of place. Sometimes its like shes totally useless or something. Like i didn't wanna be fighting and re-arranging for 2-3 hours after every 8-12 hour shift at work.
How can I tell her that her thickheaded ideas are no good and that maybe she should stop trying to move my things, without causing more aggravation to my day?

I have called several places in my area for help (poison control, health dept.'s., hazardous wastes, emergency managements, private company), specifically to get the air analyzed in my home. Only the private firm can help me - do abatement, then check air- but at considerable cost (thousands of dollars). I have also checked a number of web sites. The information from all sources ranges from- "It's nearly a hazmat situation" to "forget about it altogether". I am hoping to get some insight here from chemists who know a lot about mercury. Thank you for your patience with my post.
I broke a mercury thermometer against the kitchen sink two weeks ago. It broke in two, at the thinnest part just above the bulb. The bulb fell into the sink and the column stayed in my hand. The column still read a low temperature, 96. I looked and looked and looked. I saw no beads in the sink, on the counter, floor, throw rug, me, etc. I disposed of the thermometer at my hazardous waste place along with clothes I was wearing when thermometer broke.
No children or pregnant woman in the house. Only adults and one small pet.
My home is such that I could not close off the kitchen. I opened windows throughout the house and have kept them open nearly the entire two weeks - 95% of the time. Also began running a couple of fans, directed out windows since four days after I broke the thermometer.
Also, four days after breaking the thermometer I put water into the sink for the first time - about an inch. I saw what looked like small blackish balls being formed from the force of the water against the bottom of the sink, where the water pushed out kind of horizontally after hitting the bottom of the sink, and also in other places in the sink. The sink is very very scratched. (It is stainless steel.) I tried to pull up the balls in an eye dropper, but it only looked like clear water in the eye dropper. Some of the time the eye dropper pushed them to the surface and they burst.
As a kind of experiment I put the eye dropper under the water and pushed air out of it. Each time a small (about 1/4") metallic looking ball formed. I did this about ten times, and it seemed like I could have easily keep doing it. I drained the sink and the bubbles burst when the water receded past them.
Questions: Does all of this sound like how mercury would behave in water? Would it be displaced by water from scratches in the sink? And, can a mercury/air bubble be formed and act this way, etc.?
Since then...
I have duct taped the sink (when dry) and surrounding counter. I did not see anything on the tape.
I have used a flashlight to check the sink, counter, kitchen floor and throw rug. I saw a couple of very very small balls in the bottom and on the sides of the sink and nothing elsewhere. I duct taped the balls from the sink and again didn't see anything on the tape. Small areas of some of the scratches in the sink seem luminous. I have tried to duct tape them, but to no avail.
Questions: Would I necessarily see mercury on the duct tape? Or, if the beads are small enough, maybe not? Would duct tape pull the mercury out of the scratches? Would mercury beads stick to the sides of the sink? Would it stick to scratches in the side of the sink? Would it partially fill the scratches rather then bead up in them? What can be done, short of replacing the sink, to clean the mercury out of it?
Yesterday…I saw what looked like very small silver spots on a black shirt I have worn since (not when) I broke the thermometer. They are about the size of a grain of sand or smaller and there are about ten that I can see. Could have gotten on shirt from furniture or from pet. I have washed two loads of laundry and hung them to dry in the house, so washing machine has probably seen mercury from other clothes.
Also, yesterday I found a spot on my living room carpet the looked shiny. It was not a bead, but looked oblong and flat about 1/4"x1/3", and kind of settled in to a indentation in the carpet pattern. I tried to pick it up with a damp paper towel (with gloves on) and it disappeared. I do not know how that much mercury would have gotten in that spot, being that I didn't see that much anywhere.
Question: Does mercury always bead up, or would it take this oblong shape? Would mercury remain on top of the carpet for nearly two weeks? Wouldn't it have sunk into the carpet by then?
So…now I am thinking that in addition to the sink, there are very small/maybe microscopic mercury beads spread through my house.
Questions: How much of a concern is the amount of mercury from a thermometer dispersed through a house (about 750 sq. feet)?
Whether the mercury remains in one bead or is broken into very very small maybe microscopic beads, it's the same amount of mercury isn't it? The mer

I "inherited" a 5 year old 100 lb. female lab mix. Her previous owner allowed her to do pretty much whatever she wanted, and really spoiled her, so her obedience leaves a lot to be desired. She is a very smart dog with a gentle personality, but also is very willful. My problem is, I don't want her on my furniture! How can I make her stop (I realize it will be difficult, but am effectively stuck with the dog due to circumstances)?
moreOpen Question: can anyone tell me what this dream means?
last night i had a dream, where i was on the top floor in this large building all by myself and there was no furniture or anything, just large windows which i was standing by.
i was looking out the windows when i saw a plane wobbling a few hundred feet from the building at the same height. i thought to myself that this is awfully low for a plane and it didn't look like i was in an airport. then all of a sudden the plane smashed into the ground the same distance away. it burst into flames and smoke. i then realized it was the plane my mother was meant to be on. the crash set off a few tiny planes around it that then crashed into the bottom floor building where i was standing and the building started crumbling but i got out of it before it crumbled and i was fine.
i started running and then my step father was beside me and we were on our way to the hospital to find out if my mother was alive or not and i was telling him that if she was dead i was going to kill myself too.
anyways we got into the hospital and it was yet another blank building all i saw was my mothers ward and loads of empty beds apart from hers. she was sitting up on her bed smiling and laughing and she was completely healthy, no injuries, wounds. nothing.
does anyone know what this could mean???

moreOpen Question: What color should I paint/decorate my bedroom?
Okay, so I have decided that it is time to totally redo my room. I'm getting a new mattress and everything. The only thing that I am not changing is some of the furniture. Here I realize my problem - I inherited my great grandmothers furniture when she passed away. When she got it it was about 100 years old, so it's almost 200 years old now, so I really would love to keep it in my room, but it forces me to keep my room decoration almost victorian. I am trying to decide what color to paint my room and decorate with...the furniture is sort of an antique white, (http://www.jwminteriors.com/images/Victorian-roomshot.jpg - they are the color of this furniture). Any suggestions? thanks!! :)hmm...the link didn't work. :( lemme try again...
http://www.jwminteriors.com/images/Victorian-roomshot.jpgjust copy and paste, i guess... :P
thanks for all the answers i got so far...at this point i love the powder blue, sort of a light green and a light pink. i may try to incorporate some cocoa-y brown, if i can find the accessories. :) haha.

Where on Earth? The Peace Corps Assignment
Only one person in the world knows where you will be spending the next two years of your life. Her name is Agnes Cremaldi, and she is an assistant director of the Peace Corps training center where you're preparing for your first Peace Corps assignment. Officially,
she's not saying anything. But she might be willing to scatter a few hints in your direction. If she is, in addition to finding out whether to take sandals or hiking boots, you could start preparing yourself psychologically for the challenge that lies ahead.
Thinking back, you remember how you made up your mind to join the corps. For the past six years you had worked as a master carpenter. Your handcrafted furniture had been in demand all over the state. During the last year, however, you made two important
decisions. You wanted to travel abroad. At the same time, you wanted to continue working as a master carpenter.
After doing some research in the local library, you realized that volunteering for the Peace Corps would allow you to do both. As a Peace Corps volunteer, you would live in a developing country and use your carpentry expertise to help improve living conditions. You lost no time filling out an application form, and, shortly afterward, you were accepted.
At the Peace Corps training center, you learned how to conduct yourself as a representative of the United States on your own in a foreign country. Now you're ready for more specialized training in the language and culture of your host country-whatever country that
is.
That brings you back to Agnes Cremaldi and the question hanging over your head: Where in the world will you be spending the next two years of your life? Volunteers won't be notified officially until next week. But you have heard through the grapevine that Ms.
Cremaldi knows. And, though she can't tell, she's been dropping hints.
Assistant Director Agnes Cremaldi is always reading spy novels and loves to be mysterious. You've heard that yesterday, for example, a volunteer named Mark pressed her for more information. She told him that he might want to start practicing his Amharic. Mark looked up the unfamiliar word in the dictionary ("Amharic: a southern Semitic language, the official language in Ethiopia"), and he knew where he was headed.
You're in luck! Here comes Ms. Cremaldi now. The possibilities are driving you crazy. You have to know. "Excuse me, Ms. Cremaldi" you say. "I was wondering if. . ."
"You were wondering if I would tell you the name of your assigned country. You know I can't do that," she says sharply. Yet she pauses momentarily and looks at the ceiling, as if she's thinking.
Just as quickly, she snaps back into focus. "I will, however, tell you this much," she says. "The nation where you are going is in South Asia. One of South Asia's three major rivers is in this country. The country has two climate regions, arid and semi-arid. And the dominant religion of the country is Islam."
South Asia! But where in South Asia? What did she say? The country has one of the region's three major rivers, arid an semi-arid climates, and Islam as its dominant religion. You hurriedly jot down these clues. Then, you head for the training center's resource room.
You decide to look at a physical map of South Asia to locate the major rivers. You will also need a climate map to find a country with both arid and semi-arid climates. Finally, you will need to find information on the predominant religions in each of the countries of South Asia.
In which country is the Peace Corps assignment?
A)Pakistan
B)Afghanistan
C)Tibet
D)Nepal
moreOpen Question: remedies for cleaning ink out of an ottoman...help!?
hello!
i have an older suede living room set. i'm not sure if it's actually suede, it could be because it's older it's not as soft anymore (you know, like when you rub it one way it's one shade of the color and then rub it the other way and it's another shade), almost as though it's just a normal couch. the ottoman has a couple pen marks on it, i was wondering if there were any remedies for getting the ink out? i'm aware it's harder to get ink out the longer it's been in the furniture, so i'm hoping it's not too late! it's been a few months... =/
any ideas will be appreciated! any "whatever-you-do-don't-do-this" ideas would be just as appreciated too!
