Mattresses Beds Questions and Answers

Open Question: I need help with this first paragraph please?

The story is about an eleven year old girl who visited her grand parents, she learned from her grandpa how to build etc. She later went to see him in the nursing home and read a letter of how he had helped her and he spoke for the first time to her. Anyway the first paragraph is not right. Can you please help? Grandma and Grandpa have been a guiding force in my life since I was born. They were a perfect couple, she was short with permed gray hair and always smelled like Dove soap. Grandpa was was about six foot tall with a thin frame, silver hair and always smelled like Old Spice after shave. When I grew old enough I spent more and more time with them every summer. When they built a one room cabin on the side of a hill to stay in while building their dream home, I was there. It was during one of my visits that I realized what they meant to me. At age eleven I became Grandpa's helper and began the journey of learning from him. That one room cabin with it's wood burning stove and pitcher of water with the metal wash pan became a wonderland for me. There was little room between the table, stove and full size refrigerator that Grandpa converted to propane gas. Their perfectly made up bed was in one corner with a rose covered comforter on it. My blowup mattress was on the floor nearby. this is an essay for schoolIt does not summarize the whole story in the introduction. At least that is what the grading rudric wants. more

My litter box is clean..clean them out everyday and for some reason she keeps peeing on my bed..is there anyway I can get her to stop..? and how do I get the smell and stain out of my mattress? Someone help. I don't want to give her away someone help!! more

Open Question: Would you take this mattress or leave it?

My son has outgrown his toddler bed & I bought the bed he's been begging for, only to hit hard times financially & not have the money to buy him a decent (not fancy but not junk) mattress. My parents are offering me an *unused* Sealy Posturepedic for free... but it's been sitting uncovered in a somewhat dusty, vacant bedroom now for over 5 years - a room where they keep caged lovebirds & budgies. I imagine most of the dust in the room is from these birds & I'm more grossed out than happy about taking the mattress (though my son desperately needs one). Am I just being stuck up, or is it right to decline? What would you do in this situation? more

Open Question: Is the pill safe for a 12 year old?

My 12 year old sister (you might have seen her on here) has the most terrible periods. When we go to school in the morning, her bed is often soaked through two sheets and the mattress even with a night pad and looks (and probably feels) terrible. She's often crying and has period pain every morning. It's a nightmare. According to her, I'm the only person she can talk to apart from our mum. I'm afraid it used to happen to me. But I went on the pill and it got better, but our mum (who's an ex nurse) says the pill isn't safe for 12 year olds. But then again she said that tampons weren't safe either, and they would be too big and wouldn't fit because I wasn't developed. I've been using them since I was 11, and I'm fine! We're going to take her to the doctor soon (we've been before but they told us to wait and see) but I was just wondering if they were safe. I hate seeing her cry and I want her to feel better. Please and thank you! PS: No, for God's sake, she isn't going to have sex. She's been given Mefenamic Acid, but so far it hasn't worked at all. more

Open Question: Is it bad to have your bed too comfy?

I used to have a thin duvet and two pillows and I wouldn't have any troubles getting to sleep but it wasn't the warmest or most luxurious bed to sleep in, but on the plus side I didn't have much trouble getting up in the morning...recently though I replaced my old mattress protector with a thicker, quilted one, got quilted pillow protectors, doubled my pillows and got a duvet with a higher tog rating. I also sprinkle lavender oil on my pillows so that I sleep even better. I now have a really good nights' sleep at night and am much warmer and sleep much more deeply, but the problem is now I don't want to leave my bed in the morning...this morning it took me over an hour to get out of bed after my alarm clock went. Since then I've got nothing done all day cos I've still been really tired and haven't been able to wake up properly. I even ended up falling asleep on the couch after lunch for a couple of hours. Does it sound like my bed is so comfortable that it's bad for me? Is it better to have bed as a place that you don't mind leaving in the morning? I'm unemployed at the moment so it's difficult enough for me to have motivation to get up in the morning and get on with stuff during the day.edit: i meant i used to have 2 pillows side by side, but id only sleep on one. i bought a double bed when my gf and i were going out but she's off the scene now. more

Open Question: Does anyone know of a comfortable mattress for a sofa bed?

I was hoping I could find a mattress that would make my sofa bed more comfortable. Right now I have a 2 inch memory foam mattress but I can still feel the bar underneath. I need a better mattress but that will still fold up into the couch. more

Open Question: What can I do? IM REALLY TERRIFIED OF THIS MAN!?

So i have an apartment under my name. I'm almost 5 months pregnant and my baby daddy lives with me. We arent married. Lately he's been getting very violent with me, not actually hit me but pushes me to where i fall or grabs me from my neck. Yesterday he threw a backpack to my car window trying to break it bc i didnt get home when he wanted me to. Im really scared bc idk what to do. I dont want to get in trouble for letting him stay here when im the only one on the lease if i call the police. He is always threatning me. Everything in the apt is under my name, the bed, mattress, couches and i paid for everything except the couches but they are still under my name. I keep the receipts of everything and almost everything is under my name.... What can i do about this situation? I'm really scared of him and how he behaves. I dont want anything to happen to my baby. I have a job and i go to school. My friend offered to live with me if he leaves so i wont be alone. What can the police do about this? I want him out of my apt but he wont leave! I kicked him out but he says i need to give him back half of the rent money he paid for! Please advice me. I'M SCARED OF HIM :'( more

Open Question: How to clean foam mattress cover?

My daughter has a very nice quality foam mattress cover for her queen bed. On the day her waterproof cover was in the wash she peed in the bed, quite a lot. It soaked well through the foam but thankfully not into the mattress. My husband was the one home that night and he took the cover off and blotted with towels, and now it's been sitting for two days. How can I clean it? more

Open Question: Confused and concerned !!?

I am really confused and a bit concerned about little red bumps I am finding on my baby. He is almost 9 months old and lately I have been finding these little red bumps that appear to be bites on his face. I don't find them anywhere else on him and no one else in the house seem to have them. They are relatively small bumps that are kind of hard with a lighter colored center, like they have fluid in them. There are not many at a time, maybe one by his ear then in a few days three or four just in random places like his cheek or forehead. He doesn't get new ones everyday. It may go days before a new bump appears. With the bed bug thing going on, this is the first thing I thought of. I have examined his crib mattress several times and do not see anything. We also have a dog and cat in the house so I guess fleas are a possibility but why only on the face? He never seems to scratch these bumps so I'm not sure if they are itchy. They take several days to go away. He isn't sick. Does not have a fever, has a wonderful appetite and is always happy and smiling. I have not changed his detergent and have been using Dreft for all of his bedding and clothing since he was born. He has been getting these bumps off and on for about the last three weeks or so. Are there any ideas about what this could be? Thanks to all for any ideas about this. more

Resolved Question: Should the baby blanket fit the mattress?

This may sound like a silly question, but I'm a new mom-to-be (34 weeks pregnant with a girl), and I'm trying to get my baby's room ready. We got this really cute crib bedding set, but the blanket that came in it is waaaaay shorter than the mattress. The fitted sheet in the set was perfect, so I'm guessing the blanket is supposed to be shorter. I know that they don't actually sleep with the blanket, but how are you supposed to make it look nice in the crib while the baby's not using it? Is there a certain way that most people drape it over the crib or something? I'm lost when it comes to this stuff! :) more

Open Question: Im having a yard sale but I'm still confused about the prices?

I'm selling a bunch of things that I don't need. Kitchen ware, toys, clothes, etc. My big question is about the crib. I bought the crib for $110 and the mattress for $60. The bedding for $60 and its pink with winnie the pooh. Im not sure how much to ask for the crib and mattress together. Its pretty much new since my daughter hated sleeping there. And how much should i sell the bedding for? I've never put a yard sale before so Im a little lost. Thanks for your help! more

Resolved Question: dream about kittens (20 characters) ?

In my dream there were 2 kittens, one being really small, the other being around the average size for a newborn. They were playing with a small yellow ball i think, while me and my cousin were sitting on this hammock/mattress/set up bed thing, so there was a gap underneath and the kittens kept going underneath and we had to continuously check that they were ok under there (except i was scared to put my head down to look incase they decided to scratch me), and then i kept on getting worried that we were going to squash them as the mattress would sort of sag under our weight and after a while, i couldnt hear them anymore and they were lying in front of us like they were sleeping and i got worried in case they were dead. My cousin stroked the normal sized one which moved and i was a bit relieved but didnt want to check on the small one incase that was dead. im kinda freaked cause people say dreaming of kittens is never good and represents conflict :/ more

Do i really need a waterproof crib pad? Do i really need changing pad covers? I can go on for ever so please tell me what i really need, so far i have lots of clothes i got alot of that as gifts, so i woudlnt worry about any clothing, i have more than enough blankets, i also have the crib with mattress & crib bedding set. Open Question: Can anyone answer a question about memory foam beds?

I'm thinking of getting a pocket sprung memory foam mattress. The memory foam is the latest memory foam and is apparentely open cell so the foam doesn't absorb moisture or heat as it just flows through the foam. Can anyone tell me if this is true or wether it does create heat. Please add your sources if you want me to believe your answer! more

Open Question: What is the best kind of mattress to get (links provided)?

What is the best kind of mattress to get (links provided)? I have a really old mattress that was given to me buy an roommate when he left because i was sleeping on the floor for a year becuase i didnt have a bed after me and my boyfriend broke up. i think its a really comfortable mattress because its really firm but everyone else that lays on it says they dont sleep well on it. I want to get a foam mattress of some type and I want the bed to be a custom shape so I found this website that makes them and i have it narrowed down to four types. Open Question: Would you use a "used" crib?

My moms sister gave my husband and I a crib she had set up and used for what she said was a short time, she had it had her house for her grandson who's since grown out of it, when she gave it to us it sort of smelt like dried up rotten milk, she said that it would wipe up, its a pretty cherry wood bed and apparently it converts so a toddler bed later on, we just need a new mattress.... I am not trying to be rude, but this aunt has a tendency to buy things on sale, she said she bought it at baby's r us and it was a relatively expensive model, but she is the type of person who would buy somethinon salele with a flaw just to save a fedollarsrs....my mom was so excited for us treceiveve this crib and I dont want to offend anyone but I have NO issues stepping up and hurting feelings for the sake and safety of my child, and I have NO issues spending money on a new crib in order to ensure mchild'sds safe...the worst part is there is Nstickeret on the crib anywhere to tell me what type of crib it is, and to look up to make sure I do have all the parts (since we took it from my aunt in pieces) and to ensure there are no recalls, which scares me Who anyone use a used crib?? or have?? is there any way I can look for a serial number or a website to ensure the cribs safe? more

Open Question: Is there a way to report my landlord?

Without getting a lawyer? Okay so I am a college student who just moved off campus and my landlord showed us a DIFFERENT house than the one I am currently living in. My house number is 25 1/2 but my lease says 25. I liked the room in 25, but in this house, it is NOT like that at all. In my room, the door is incapable of locking(NOT broken, just too old and has NO lock) NO window screens There is a ladder outside that leads to my bedroom. The window doesn't lock There is a blood stain in the closet.. My mattress has bed bugs. I told him about it. He said he replaced it with a 'NEW' mattress while I was in class. To my horror, there are vomit and urine stains COVERING it. The shower window faces our neighbors porch and has no thing for curtains. It smells terrible in the bathroom. There are many broken panels in the hallways, so bats fly in and out..... I cannot take this any longer. What should I do? I signed the lease for house number 25 which is my neighbors house....NOT this hell-hole My landlord never picks up to fix my problems. more

Open Question: What could be biting us? Gnats, fleas, bed bugs?

We have lived in this house for 3 months, it has a HUGE grassy backyard and a grassy front yard and recently we have been getting bitten. 1st it was on our lower legs and feet, so we just thought it was chiggers. But now it's on our hands, the kids upper legs, backs and arms. We thought it could be bed bugs at first, but we don't see any signs of bed bugs on the mattresses. And when I'm on the computer at night, I feel things on me and the next morning I have bites in the same places I felt things. Also I see tiny things flying around the computer screen, but I don't see a lot of them, so I'm wondering what could it be? I read that fleas don't fly, but when I look up bed bugs bites, they all seem to be right in a row or bunched together, and ours are more spread out. They range from tiny little red bumps to bigger ones a bit smaller than a dime. But they are all very itchy. So coud it be gnats in our house? Could gnats bite us while we sleep, or are we getting them during the day and maybe they don't show up til the next day? And if you have experienced this what was it and what could I do about it? I don't wanna keep getting bit. And I need something that will work but that is safe for the kids to be around. Please help!!! more

ma 1 year old has bites on her hands, fingers and forearms, mostly on the right. she also has 3 much smaller bites on her right cheek. the ones on her hands and arms seem grouped close together and all had tiny fluid filled heads on them. i've never seen mesquito bites grouped on twos or threes like that, but the past 2 nites i was outside with her at dusk for quite some time. i also got bitten around the ankles and legs but they were spread far apart. i checked her crib and mattress seams but found nothing. what am i looking at here. more

Resolved Question: Bed bugs are spreading throughout the US and UK: Do you have any suspicious itchy bites?

It's no longer just the scourge of the lower classes. They come out to feed when you're fast asleep. They inject you with a substance that numbs so you don't feel them feasting upon your blood. There could be hundreds of them in your mattress, box spring, bed frame, carpet, or furniture. Sleep well tonight................. more

Resolved Question: Replacing a box spring with something else?

We have a king size bed that is made of two mattresses pushed together. They are memory foam and were given to my husband and I as a wedding gift from my grandma. The only thing I don't like is the fact we have to have a box spring under them. I like lower beds, and I am wondering if there is a thinner box spring available, or can we use a large piece of plywood? Any suggestions? They are extremely good quality, so I don't want to do anything to compromise that. more

Open Question: Does Diatomaceous Earth kick around and cause dust clouds, or does it stay on the floor?

We have a bed bug problem and we're thinking about buying diatomaceous earth to spread around the house and on the mattress and in carpets, I would like to know if it kicks up into the air and causes small clouds of dust or if it just stays on the floor and just moves around. Also, can I mix it with water and then put it on the floor to prevent dust clouds and still kill bed bugs?DE actually works by breaking down the wax on the insects skin, rendering it vulnerable to dehydration, and therefore dying. I know how it works already. I just want to know if it kicks around and causes dust clouds, or if it stays on the floor! I appreciate your helpfulness though. more

Open Question: does this sound like bed bugs to you? or just mosquito bites?

i woke up 2 days ago with about 6 bites that itch (clearly from some sort of blood sucker, very much resembles a mosquito bite). i am prone to mosquito bites and get them alot outdoors, but have also found them occassionally in my apt which is pretty old. there are 3 bites in a sort of triangle in one spot on my lower back, 2 next to each other on my back shoulder, and one on my stomache (sleep without a shirt). i freaked out and checked my bed and linens. there is no sign of blood streaks or fecal stains on anything including the sheets and mattress and i haven't found any actual bugs or sheddings or anything odd....my mattress is super clean and so were the sheets and pad (checked box spring too). i ended up washing them just in case. if i had bed bugs, and already have bites from them, would i necessarily find these blood spots, bugs, and/or other things left behind from them in the mattress seams, etc??? shouldn't there be 'signs' of them? also, how often do they bite, i havent gotten any new bites since 2 nights ago, so i'm hoping its just mosquito bites. tell me i should stop freaking out please!oh, and i haven't traveled or been to any hotels lately. more

Open Question: Can anyone help me with Bed bugs?

News have mentioned something about bed bugs and anything on the news is serious. I live in Chicago and they have said we are one of the most bed bug infestation cities in the country. (http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=7627698) I've noticed bites on my arm 2 or 3 days ago 4 on one arm and one on the other. My mom called an exterminator and he will be coming Saturday. I can't wear my clothes or anything and i have to clear out any cloth in my room and stick them in bags so i can wash them and what not. Now, we haven't seen any bug until today when my mom went into my room while it was dark and used a flashlight to search on my mattress and found one. That's when i knew i really had them. I decided i am throwing away the mattress even though i don't need to but when it comes to bugs, i panic and get super grossed out. I figured get a smaller new bed with the mattress, box spring, pillow covers and i'll feel a bit more safe. I just need to know any important information or help. Anything. i've done a lot of research but i feel like i'm reading the same thing over and over I would appreciate it tons more

Open Question: Is hydrogen peroxide the only thing that could be bothering me from my organic bedding?

Hi, I recently got an organic cotton mattress without any flame retardants and an organic cotton pillow. I was told the only thing in them was cotton, ticking, and metal springs in the mattress, but I have a reaction to them. They have a weird smell to them, and I'm thinking maybe it's hydrogen peroxide. The textiles and cotton are not dyed, contain no boric acid... what else other than hydrogen peroxide as a sterilizing agent could they use in an organic prescription no FR cotton mattress than could cause these symptoms: -Dryness and Tightness in throat (largely this is the problem) -sore lungs -headache -no excess mucous as in an allergy -lower intestinal or perhaps cervical cramps (in females :p) -tiredness upon awakening -lasting effects for up to 6 hours after awakening -no permanent effects after that as far as I can tell -symptoms noticeably lets up once I leave the room. Also, the smell I smell when I enter the room is a pungent, bitter smell and mostly I can taste in in the back of my throat. I'm not sure if what's causing the smell is the same thing that's causing my reaction, but it could be a hint. I have so, so many allergies. I have chemical sensitivities that "no one" should be sensitive to like PET plastics and aluminum and boric acid, so if you know anything about bed manufacturing and what chemicals they could use to sterilize and treat raw organic cotton or maybe the cause of the yellowish color or the ticking, or whatever you could think of that could cause the symptoms described above, or do you have the experience to know if perhaps my reaction is an indication of sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide, I'd appreciate your input. If it is hydrogen peroxide, I will keep the mattress and pillow because I know it rapidly decomposes once its exposed to elements so I'll just let it air out and these problems shouldn't persist. Thanks for your help in advance. more

Voting Question: Help! Could this be bed bugs?

I've had bed bugs before but it was somewhere around 9 years ago. One day out of nowhere came a large bug bite. A couple of days later I noticed one more bite. I know that isn't very much but my dad mentioned that it could be from bed bugs. When I had it last time, I had many many bites. I have a futon mattress. We looked all over it and even inside where the filling is. I found nothing and so did he. We looked for probably 20 minutes. I have a really severe fear of bugs so I am freaking out. I am afraid to lay on the bed even though we found absolutely no signs of them. So, with just 2 bites in 3 days, do you think it could be bed bugs? Or more likely something else? Any help is appreciated because it is 11pm and I should be sleeping but I am afraid to lay down. My fear of bugs is irrational. So, help is very much appreciated. Thanks. more

Voting Question: Little Brother Problems >:O, Won't sleep in his own room!!?

Ok. So my little brother who is seven years old, is rly annoying and he has his own room, he has a brand new bed that my parents spent money on. But he won't sleep in his own room, so he goes and sleeps on my parent's bed, (which is king size), but he kicks, makes noises and wakes my parents up. So i let him sleep in my room on an air mattress, so my parents can sleep properly but he them keeps me awake and I need sleep to because school starts soon and I have to wake up at six am. I talked to my mom about it and she agrees with me that he should sleep in his own room, but we've tried and it doesn't work. Also I think he's rly spoiled. Any ideas on what I should do!? thnx :) more

Voting Question: How can I make my bed not feel the vibrations in the apartment?

I live in a super noisy hotel here in S.F. I moved to the top floor which is way less noisy. But the vibrations of stairs etc. wake me up almost every hour. I don't hear any sound but the vibrations always get me and I think that I might be going crazy. I was thinking maybe an air mattress but I don't know if this will work. Please help more

Voting Question: little red bumps on my arms?

so last week my girlfriend and i went and stayed in a hotel over night. it was a nice place, seemed really clean. a few days after she noticed tiny red bumps on her arms, near her wrists, etc. i didn't have them at the time, however, i've now started noticing them too. i wouldn't even call them red, they're pink really, have no tiny red puncture marks in the middle, and they don't itch at all. i ONLY have them on my arms, i haven't noticed them anywhere else, which really makes me feel like they aren't bed bugs. but i've cleaned my sheets and vacuumed my mattress, and have been using anti-bacterial soap on my body. to be honest i'm not sure if i've been getting new ones or if i'm just noticing ones that i didn't notice before. any ideas? more

Voting Question: Did your water break at home?

I took the plastic off my bed because i'm a really light sleeper any little noise bothers me. Its a brand new king size memory foam mattress and i don't want to ruin it. I was just wondering how often does a first time mom have her water break while she's sleeping. Should I get a plastic thing for my bed or is it not gonna be that much water to ruin the mattress? more

Voting Question: bed wetting and 4 year old?

My 4 year has been potty trained since she was 3 - I mean 100% during the day Much harder time during the night She doesn't want to wear pull ups because she is not a baby She gets upset when she wets the bed cause she knows its wrong and that she should get up and go potty but really I just think she sleeps to deep to wake up Some nights she told me she woke up and went potty by herself and went back to bed Other nights she is dry But like this week she has peed he bed 3 times.... She went 2 months without peeing the bed over the summer and now she is doing it like once or twice a week we have sheet protectors now so i can easily strip her bed and just wipe down the mattress so doing laundry really is not the issue... although i dont like the extra laundry i have no problem doing it Do I put her back in pullups? Do I just keep letting her pee the bed what to doCoxxxy get a life Well she goes to bed at 8 gonna try cutting liquids off at 6 I really don't wanna wake her up in the night cause I think that might hurt the training because then she might get used to going in the middle of the night and on top of that I dont wanna have to wake her up if I dont have to more

Resolved Question: What does a big black scorpion mean in your dream?

ok this early morning I woke up having this dream. I was close to my bed or maybe in my bed, I can't remember, and my sister was near me (she's 10) and my mom was standing somewhere close to the bed by the door. the room was not familiar at all, I don't think I was there before, and it wasn't my bed. Then somehow the bed was empty like there is no mattress or spring-box, it was just the bed skeleton and you could see the floor underneath it. Suddenly we saw this huge scorpion, with really big white eyes and a big tail on one right top side of the bed. As I and my sister were standing on left end angle of the bed the scorpion appeared close to our feet. It was going toward my sister first. so she backed up, and my mom was telling us something but I can't remember, I think she said don't mover or something like that. after my sister backed up the scorpion started to come towards me I was scared but I wasn't screaming or crying, I actually stood there without moving and I guess I felt it touching my feet but not stinging, and then it went, it appeared on another angle of the bed, but I could see it still. That's as much as I can remember! oh it is so nerve racking I've been trying to figure out what the dream means since morning, I looked at the interpretation for scorpion in dream but it does not suffice me. I still think it should have a different meaning or maybe a more completed meaning, I'm sure coz it was towards the morning, and it had nothing to do with stuff I was thinking about the day before. I don't think that it means someone in my life either, because I almost checked any close relative or friend's birth date, but nobody is a scorpion! please help, it is so nerve racking, help help help, real help, please don't just copy the dream book for me I've read it 100 times by now. answer me if you could really interpret everything in this specific dream. Thanks.help pleaseeeee more
